AtHome is a two-year program which promotes holistic integration for refugees in Athens.
At Home is a ministry of the Evangelical Church in Glyfada, Greece. It is a two-year program which promotes holistic integration for refugees in Athens by providing refugees with access to housing, language classes, business training and other opportunities to adapt and thrive independently in Greece. We emphasize community development and cultural interaction that connects Greeks and refugees in meaningful ways and contributes to the common good of the local community.
At Home began as an early response to the refugee crisis in Greece in 2015. At that time, the largest refugee camp in Athens was situated five minutes from Glyfada church. Initially, the church responded by helping the government to organize food and clothing distributions, and later by hosting classes and events at the church. Midway through 2016 the camp was closed, but the church continued to maintain close connections with a network of 150 refugees. While some refugees were relocated to alternate housing by NGOs, many were left to fend for themselves on the street.
The church realized that while short-term relief was necessary, it did not solve the long-term difficulties of helping refugees become self-sustaining.
